Thailand Requests Clarification from Iran for Missing Crew
The Mayuree Naree, carrying 23 Thai sailors, was targeted while traveling from Abu Dhabi to India amid ongoing U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent retaliatory actions in the region. The Thai Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador in Bangkok, Nassereddin Heidari, “to seek clarification” over the incident.
Following the attack, Omani naval forces rescued 20 crew members, while search efforts continue for the three missing sailors, believed to have been working in the ship’s engine room. Authorities have also urged restraint and expressed “grave concern” over the intensifying crisis in the Middle East, highlighting that the conflict threatens the lives of civilians, including Thai nationals, and disrupts freedom of navigation after the vessel was struck.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of escalating hostilities in the region. Since February 28, U.S. and Israeli operations in Iran have reportedly resulted in around 1,300 casualties, including civilians and officials. Iran has responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting U.S. forces.
Additionally, Tehran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz since early March, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stating that any vessel wishing to transit the waterway must obtain permission from Iran.
