Heavy Rains Cause Fatal Flooding, Mass Displacement in Northwest Syria

(MENAFN) Heavy rainfall in northwest Syria over the weekend triggered flash floods that have killed at least three people and forced hundreds of families from their homes, creating “difficult humanitarian conditions” across multiple areas, according to reports.

The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management said flooding occurred from early Saturday through late Sunday night, damaging civilian communities and 22 displacement camps west of Idlib.

Two children were swept away and killed in a valley in the al-Assaliya and Ain Issa areas of the Turkman Mountain region in rural Latakia. Additionally, a volunteer with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent was killed, and six others—including five Red Crescent volunteers—were injured in a traffic accident while traveling to assist flood-affected residents.

Floodwaters submerged 30 homes in the village of Sheikh Hassan and 47 homes across Idlib province. More than 650 families saw their homes destroyed, while over 1,300 families suffered partial damage. The ministry confirmed that 22 displacement camps in Idlib were affected.

The flooding also forced the evacuation of patients, medical staff, and incubators from Ain al-Bayda Hospital in the Kharbat al-Jawz area west of Idlib.

Authorities set up seven temporary shelters in schools across western Idlib to accommodate displaced families and distributed emergency relief supplies, including to 80 families at al-Rahma School and five families at al-Ansar shelter. Urgent medical services were also provided to those impacted, the ministry said.
