South Africa Apprehends Four Men Travelling to Russia

(MENAFN) South African authorities have detained four men en route to Russia via the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on suspicion of attempting to enlist in foreign armed forces.

South Africa's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) announced Saturday that the men were apprehended Friday at OR Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg following intelligence received through a tip-off.

The Hawks stated the suspects are scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court Monday facing charges of contravening the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act, 15 of 1998.

South African law explicitly forbids citizens and residents from engaging in unauthorized foreign military operations or mercenary activities.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that a South African female had allegedly been facilitating the travel and recruitment of these individuals into the Russian Federation military," the statement said without naming the suspect.

The Hawks reported seizing electronic devices and two backpacks from the suspects for forensic examination, while collaborating with domestic and international intelligence agencies to uncover the recruitment network's complete infrastructure.

Multiple reports indicate dozens of Africans deceived with employment promises in Russia have been deployed to combat zones in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

South African police initiated an investigation this month into allegations that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, recruited 17 South Africans to fight with Russia in its ongoing war.

Sambudla, a member of the opposition uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK), resigned from parliament Friday following the allegations.
